The Berliet marque was eliminated by 1980.Marius Berliet started his / her experiments with automobiles with 1894. Some single-cylinder cars had been followed in 1900 by way of a twin-cylinder model. In 1902, Berliet took over this plant of Audibert & Lavirotte inside Lyon. Berliet started to construct four-cylinder automobiles featured with a honeycomb radiator and aluminum chassis frame was used rather than wood. Just before World War I, Berliet offered a range of models from 8 CONTINUE to 60 CV. The main models acquired four-cylinder engines (2412 cc and 4398 cc, respectively), and there was a six-cylinder type of 9500 cc. A 1539 cc design (12 CV) was produced between 1910 and also 1912. From 1912, six-cylinder models were made upon individual orders just. The First World War generated a massive increase sought after. Berliet, like Renault and Latil, produced trucks for your French army. The military orders placed major demands within the factory's capacity, necessitating major investment with production plant and manufacturer space. In 1915 a 600 hectare site was purchased between Vénissieux et Saint-Priest in order to build a new major factory. The Berliet CBA evolved into the iconic truck within the Voie Sacrée, supplying the battle the front at Verdun during 1916. 25, 000 of these 4/5 load Berliet trucks, originally launched in 1914, were ordered by this French army. During 1916 40 of these were leaving the plant daily. Under license from Renault, Berliet were also generating shells and battle tanks at this time. The number of employees employed increased to 3, 150.By 1917 the importance of annual turnover acquired multiplied fourfold since the beginning of the war, and a new legitimate structure was deemed appropriate. The company became the actual Société anonyme des Automobiles Marius Berliet. As soon as the war the manufacturer reoriented section of its production back in order to passenger cars, but Berliet nevertheless discovered themselves with excess capacity, as the army was don't buying all the pickup trucks the factory could develop, and overall output halved.Marius Berliet responded for the outbreak of peace by deciding to generate just a single kind of truck and a single kind of car, which represented a leaving from his pre-war current market strategy. The single truck what is the best Berliet focused was this 5 ton CBA that had served the nation so well during the war.

The passenger car to be produced, exhibited on the Berliet stand for the 15th Paris Motor Indicate in October 1919, was the 3296cc (15HP/CV) "Torpedo" bodied "Berliet Form VB" of modern look. Marius Berliet was not one to miss a key: rather than devote occasion and engineering talent to creating a new car for the newest decade, he obtained and ripped an American Dodge. The Dodge was famously robust, and the Berliet replicate was well received throughout March 1919 when it had its first open outing, locally, at the Lyon Industry Fair. The headlights were mounted unusually high and the simple disc wheels were large, giving the car a nice "no nonsense" look. Particularly attractive was the expense of just 11, 800 francs in Oct 1919. Unfortunately, however, the Berliet engineers failed to make sure that the steel used in the car's construction was of the same quality as the Us steel used for this Dodge, and this resulted in series problems for that early customers of the actual "Berliet Type VB" and serious reputational injury to the company.

The factory was set up to produce the "Berliet Type VB" with the rate of 100 cars each day which would have been an ambitious target beneath any circumstances. The rapid drop-off successful for what at this point was the manufacturer's merely passenger car model that followed the high quality issues plunged the business into financial difficulties, with losses of fifty-five million francs recorded in a year. Survival was in skepticism, and Berliet was put into judicial administration in 1921. Marius Berliet himself had held 88% on the share capital, but was unable in order to all the company's creditors as well as the firm therefore fell into the hands of the banks. Berliet was nevertheless able to retain operational control. During the ensuring decade, supported by a sustained recovery in demand that in turn reflected a good model strategy after 1922, Berliet was able to pay off his debtors and, in 1929, to regain financial control within the business from the banking institutions.
