Ahead of World War I, Berliet offered a variety of models from 8 CURRICULUM VITAE to 60 CV. The main models got four-cylinder engines (2412 cc and 4398 cc, respectively), and there was a six-cylinder style of 9500 cc. A 1539 cc model (12 CV) was produced between 1910 along with 1912. From 1912, six-cylinder models were created upon individual orders just. The First World War generated a massive increase in demand. Berliet, like Renault and Latil, produced trucks for this French army. The military orders placed major demands about the factory's capacity, necessitating major investment in production plant and factory space. In 1915 a 600 hectare site was ordered between Vénissieux et Saint-Priest so as to build a new key factory. The Berliet CBA grew to become the iconic truck within the Voie Sacrée, supplying the battle entry at Verdun during 1916. 25, 000 of these 4/5 load Berliet trucks, originally launched in 1914, were ordered by the particular French army. During 1916 40 of which were leaving the plant everyday. Under license from Renault, Berliet were also making shells and battle tanks right now. The number of personnel employed increased to 3, 150.By 1917 the price of annual turnover had multiplied fourfold since the beginning of the war, and a new lawful structure was deemed ideal. The company became your Société anonyme des Autos Marius Berliet. As soon as the war the manufacturer reoriented section of its production back to help passenger cars, but Berliet nevertheless found themselves with excess capacity, as the army was no longer buying all the pickups the factory could make, and overall output halved.Marius Berliet responded towards the outbreak of peace by deciding to make just a single sort of truck and a single kind of car, which represented a leaving from his pre-war marketplace strategy. The passenger car being produced, exhibited on the Berliet stand on the 15th Paris Motor Present in October 1919, was the 3296cc (15HP/CV) "Torpedo" bodied "Berliet Form VB" of modern physical appearance. Marius Berliet was probably none to miss a trick: rather than devote moment and engineering talent to creating a new car for the newest decade, he obtained and duplicated an American Dodge. The Dodge was once robust, and the Berliet replicate was well received within March 1919 when this had its first public outing, locally, at the Lyon Buy and sell Fair. The headlights were mounted unusually high along with the simple disc wheels had been large, giving the car a nice "no nonsense" look. Particularly attractive was the cost of just 11, 800 francs in October 1919. Unfortunately, however, the Berliet engineers failed to ensure the steel used within the car's construction was on the same quality as the United states steel used for this Dodge, and this resulted in series problems for your early customers of the actual "Berliet Type VB" and serious reputational injury to the company.

The factory was set up to generate the "Berliet Type VB" on the rate of 100 cars each day which would have recently been an ambitious target within any circumstances. The rapid drop-off in demand for what at this time was the manufacturer's just passenger car model that followed the standard issues plunged the small business into financial difficulties, with losses of 55 million francs recorded available as one year. Survival was in question, and Berliet was put into judicial administration in 1921. Marius Berliet himself had held 88% in the share capital, but was unable to all the company's creditors plus the firm therefore fell in the hands of the banks. Berliet was nevertheless capable to retain operational control. During the ensuring decade, supported by a sustained recovery in demand that in turn reflected a simple yet effective model strategy after 1922, Berliet was able to repay his debtors and, in 1929, to regain financial control over the business from the banks.
