Berliet has been a French manufacturer of automobiles, buses, trucks and military automobiles among other vehicles located in Vénissieux, outside of Lyon, France. Founded in 1899, and apart from any five-year period from 1944 to 1949 when it had been put into 'administration sequestre' it was in private ownership until 1967 when after that it became part of Citroën, and subsequently acquired simply by Renault in 1974 as well as merged with Saviem in a new Renault Trucks corporation in 1978. The Berliet marque was eliminated by 1980.Marius Berliet started their experiments with automobiles within 1894. Some single-cylinder cars were being followed in 1900 by a twin-cylinder model. In 1902, Berliet took over the actual plant of Audibert & Lavirotte with Lyon. Berliet started to assemble four-cylinder automobiles featured by the honeycomb radiator and metal chassis frame was used instead of wood. The next year, a model was launched which was similar to contemporary Mercedes. In 1906, Berliet sold the licence for manufacturing his model for the American Locomotive Company.

Previous to World War I, Berliet offered a choice of models from 8 CURRICULUM VITAE to 60 CV. The main models experienced four-cylinder engines (2412 closed circuit and 4398 cc, respectively), and there was a six-cylinder type of 9500 cc. A 1539 cc type (12 CV) was produced between 1910 and 1912. From 1912, six-cylinder models were built upon individual orders merely. The First World War generated a massive increase widely used. Berliet, like Renault and Latil, produced trucks for the actual French army. The military orders placed major demands on the factory's capacity, necessitating major investment with production plant and manufacturing plant space. In 1915 a 500 hectare site was obtained between Vénissieux et Saint-Priest in order to build a new main factory. The Berliet CBA grew to become the iconic truck around the Voie Sacrée, supplying the battle entry at Verdun during 1916. 25, 000 of these 4/5 heap Berliet trucks, originally launched in 1914, were ordered by the French army. During 1916 40 ones were leaving the plant on a daily basis. Under license from Renault, Berliet were also generating shells and battle tanks right now. The number of personnel employed increased to 3, 150.By 1917 the price of annual turnover had multiplied fourfold since the start of the war, and a new appropriate structure was deemed proper. The company became the particular Société anonyme des Motor vehicles Marius Berliet. After the war the manufacturer reoriented section of its production back to help passenger cars, but Berliet nevertheless found themselves with excess capacity, as the army was not buying all the trucks the factory could create, and overall output halved.Marius Berliet responded towards outbreak of peace by deciding to generate just a single form of truck and a single type of car, which represented a starting from his pre-war current market strategy. The single truck what is the best Berliet focused was your 5 ton CBA that had served the media so well during your war.

The passenger car being produced, exhibited on the Berliet stand in the 15th Paris Motor Present in October 1919, was the 3296cc (15HP/CV) "Torpedo" bodied "Berliet Type VB" of modern visual appeal. Marius Berliet was it's unlikely that any to miss a tip: rather than devote time and engineering talent to creating a new car for the revolutionary decade, he obtained and replicated an American Dodge. The Dodge was notoriously robust, and the Berliet backup was well received throughout March 1919 when the item had its first public outing, locally, at the Lyon Industry Fair. The headlights were mounted unusually high along with the simple disc wheels have been large, giving the car a nice "no nonsense" look. Particularly attractive was the expense of just 11, 800 francs in October 1919. Unfortunately, however, the Berliet engineers failed to ensure the steel used within the car's construction was on the same quality as the United states steel used for the Dodge, and this resulted in series problems to the early customers of the "Berliet Type VB" and serious reputational destruction of the company.

The factory had been set up to produce the "Berliet Type VB" at the rate of 100 cars every day which would have been recently an ambitious target below any circumstances. The rapid drop-off widely used for what during this period was the manufacturer's just passenger car model that followed the quality issues plunged the enterprise into financial difficulties, with losses of 55 million francs recorded in one year. Survival was in skepticism, and Berliet was used in judicial administration in 1921. Marius Berliet himself had held 88% with the share capital, but was unable to repay all the company's creditors and the firm therefore fell in to the hands of the finance institutions. Berliet was nevertheless competent to retain operational control. During the ensuring few years, supported by a sustained recovery widely used that in turn reflected a highly effective model strategy after 1922, Berliet was able to his debtors and, in 1929, to regain financial control over the business from the financial institutions.
